The National: Achieving Agile Processes for Online Content Management

The National is the first English-language newspaper under the umbrella of Abu Dhabi Media Company (ADMC), a United Arab Emirates company. Published from the capital, Abu Dhabi, the newspaper and its website aim to cover news both locally and across the Middle East, within the context of rapid political and social change. “We differentiate ourselves through the quality journalism and qualified in-depth analysis into UAE and Middle East current affairs and business”, says David Green, Web Supervisor at The National.
The National continues it digital growth by distributing content on multiple platforms.


The challenge

When ADMC decided to update The National website it chose Web Experience Management solution from OpenText. To ensure the modernization and the efficient management of the site, VILT was invited to incorporate its expertise in OpenText technology and its 10 years of experience in large content management projects. 
VILT also brought on board a more agile development methodology that was more compatible with the ambitious timings ADMC puts on its projects.

The solution

VILT, using OpenText Web Experience Management, has implemented a website that fully respected ADMC requirements, aggregating content from multiple sources and delivering to thousands of simultaneous users around the world.

The OpenText platform allows editors to produce content in a WYSIWYG process that takes full advantage of on-page editing.

One of the most valuable components implemented was a multi-layer content caching mechanism that supports any page render below 3 seconds even under extremely high loads.

Also within the scope of VILT responsibility was the consolidation of the three existing user registry databases and the creation of a single sign-on mechanism between The National, ADMC Sport  and Anazahra and websites.

The results

In recognition of VILT's contribution to the success of the project, a 24x7 support and maintenance contract was signed between both companies to guarantee a continued smooth and reliable website operation as well as a close support for the editorial team on a daily basis.
